Renovation of the service wing of a mansion house for new owners who entertain frequently. The original kitchen and first-floor staff workrooms—all obsolete, even for a family who maintain a domestic staff—are substantially altered to serve two functions equally well: as a gracious space for daily use by the family and their chef, and as a service kitchen to be used by caterers. Principal materials: quartersawn white oak, rectified-edge thickset tile, stone, cast plaster crown, flat-carved balusters in the Lutyens manner.
